Since less than one year Melle Daamen (1959) is director of Theatre Rotterdam, the largest theatre-organisation in the Netherlands. From 2001 to 2016 Melle Daamen has been general director of the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, the main theatre in Amsterdam. In the eight years before that he was founding director of the Mondriaan Foundation, a cultural fund providing funding for visual art, design and museum activities, both national and international.
Furthermore Melle Daamen was board member and governor of several cultural organisations. At 17 he was chosen in the governing board of VPRO broadcasting, at 21 he was the youngest governing board member ever of NOS national broadcasting. In addition Daamen was president of AT5 broadcasting and the International Filmfestival Rotterdam. He was initiator and president of the Commission Cultural Governance. June 2007 Daamen was appointed for eight years by HM the Queen as one of the 9 members of the Counsel for Arts and Culture, advising the National Government on policy matters. He published several articles in Dutch newpapers
Melle Daamen gained his Master’s degree in Political Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. In 2016 he received the Silver Medal of the City of Amsterdam.
