Fred Efrem Kelemen is born 1969 in Berlin, Germany, as the son of Hungarian-German parents. He studied painting, music, philosophy, religion and theatre science and worked in different theatres as a director’s assistant before he began his studies at the German Film and TV Academy in Berlin (DFFB) in 1989. Since the beginning of his Film studies he has directed a number of films and videos and has collaborated as director of photography and cameraman with several directors like Béla Tarr, Yesim Ustaoglu, Hector Faver, Gariné Torossian, Rudolf Thome, a.o. From 2000 to 2002 he directed several plays at different theatres in Germany. Since 1995 he is working as guest lecturer at the Centre of Cinematographical Studies of Catalania (CECC) in Barcelona, Spain, at the School of Visual Arts (ESBAG) in Geneva, Switzerland and at the Latvian Cultural Academy (LKA) in Riga, Latvia. Retrospectives of his works has been presented in Lisbon Portugal (1997), Belgrade Yugoslavia, Cambridge USA and Athens Greece (2000), Brussels Belgium and Oslo Norway (2001), Hanover Germany (2002), New York USA and Buenos Aires Argentina (2003), Berlin Germany (2004), Barcelona Spain and Bern Switzerland (2005) and Ankara Turkey (2006). In 2006 retrospectives of his films is presented in London England, Buenos Aires Argentina and Potsdam Germany. Fred Efrem Kelemen is a member of the European Film Academy.
